Praise for Bob Herbert's Hold Your Heads Up

The point of this blog is to uplift the concept of liberalism and to help promote the true ideals of liberalism.

I read an article today that embodies this goal. New York Times OP-ED columnist Bob Herbert is a man after my own heart. In his article, Hold Your Heads Up, Bob states this as his concluding statement:
It would take volumes to adequately cover the enhancements to the quality of American lives and the greatness of American society that have been wrought by people whose politics were unabashedly liberal. It is a track record that deserves to be celebrated, not ridiculed or scorned.

Self-hatred is a terrible thing. Just ask that arch-conservative Clarence Thomas.

Liberals need to get over it.

Bob brings up the point that I make again and again. Liberals are embarrassed by their own beliefs. We have been so pummeled by the radical right that we apologize for being caring, fair-minded and concerned about people and the world in which we live.

It's time for us to understand the importance of liberalism. LIBERAL is a good and honorable word and philosophy. The right-wing media continually uses the word Liberal as a dirty moniker for everything bad and nasty in the world. This is a crime that we as liberals must work to correct within our own thinking and in the thinking of the world around us.

First, just like Stuart Smalley in the movie Stuart Saves His Family, we need to look in the mirror and say, "I'm smart enough, good enough, and dog gone it, people like me."

Then we need to take Bob's advice and hold our heads high. Start to gain an understanding that our world is a much better place because of the work of many liberals who have gone before us.

Lastly, we need to proudly go and do good in our world.
